The New Depot

At a "town meeting" in March, 1997, a concept to rebuild the station was met with unanimous community endorsement. The Remsen Development Corporation (RDC) was formed to oversee the project. Volunteers cleared decades of brush and debris, restored the water tank, excavated the turntable site and constructed the canopy portion of the depot by August, 1998. The RDC acquired 23 adjacent acres linking the depot to the Remsen-Steuben Historical Society's Stone Meetinghouse and Heritage Park.

By November, 1998, the new depot was framed in on the repaired foundation of the previous two stations. Working from old photos, its exterior is as true to the 1890's depot as possible. The interior is more open to accommodate groups and events. The passenger waiting room contain the original stove, original benches, and photographs from the depot's history. The baggage room contains more photographs as well as a display of railroad memorabilia. The telegraph office includes authentic equipment wired to simulate operation. There are a small gift shop, kitchenette, and accessible restrooms. Adirondack Scenic Railroad (ADIX) passengers have approvingly noted parking, exterior lighting and grounds improvements at the Depot.

The project was made possible with the unprecedented support from over 400 individuals, businesses, organizations, and local governments contributing donated / discounted materials, supplies, equipment, professional services and labor, and with the assistance of several small grants. Much of the work was accomplished in the midst of hosting dozens of public events, ADIX trains, school groups, group tours, and casual visitors.

The spirited project continues with the recent construction of a plank loading platform, accessible raised loading platform, and reinstallation of a 1400' runaround track with two storage sidings. Operating expenses are funded by donations, and annual fundraisers, including a 6-acre corn maze, Runaround 5K road race, and Remsen Barn Festival parking.

A major long-range economic development project to recreate a typical 20th century Main Street as "Depot Street" within a Remsen rail yard context is in the planning stages. Also planned are the addition of some railroad equipment including a "crew house" and a caboose.

The Remsen Depot grounds are available for private, public, and organization events and tours. If you are interested in using the Depot grounds please contact us.
